We’re getting the 12th Doctor, and, by extension, the 13th regeneration, this Christmas. Now, it is years off, but the regeneration limit looms. There’s a few ways to handle this. Some have proposed ignoring it, which I disagree with, because there’s so much fun to be milked out of it.
So here is how I’d handle it.
We start off about a third of a season before the 12th Doctor is slated to regenerate with the reintroduction of Romana, having escaped to back into E-Space before the end of the Time War, as beautifully foreshadowed by Neil Gaiman in “The Doctor’s Wife”.
Romana takes up residence as a companion, we keep everything looking normal, and at the season finale, the Doctor is mortally wounded and is unable to regenerate. He’s at the end of his cycle.
Thinking quickly and knowing more about the functoning of a Tardis than the human companions, gets the Doctor into suspended animation in the Zero Room/Medbay. It won’t last forever, but it will keep him stable, for now.
Now, Romana and the companions go looking for some means to grant the Doctor a new cycle of 12 regenerations. Not over the course of an episode or two parter. Not over the course of a special. Over the course of an entire season.
During this time, to keep the Doctor’s enemies from realizing he’s vulnerable or worse, out of the picture, Romana takes the title of The Doctor.
We get a good season-arc story, a year’s worth of anticipation of the 13th Doctor, a female Doctor to test the waters, and ultimately the regeneration of the Doctor in a new cycle. Use the Rani or the Master as an arc-villain trying to capture the same source of regenerations for themselves, an episode where they have to journey into the Doctor’s mind so he can guest star, and who knows, maybe that cache of regeneration energy is inside a hidden Tardis, a relic of the time war.
And what does Romana get out of this?
Edit: I had forgotten that I’d seen this wander across my dash a ways back, and elements apparently settled into my brain to linger subconsciously, so credit where credit is due.
Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link.
Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos.
This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap.
